Welcome to the
Wiltshire LDWA Website
Home Page
The Wiltshire branch of the Long Distance Walkers Association is one of over 40 local
groups situated around the country. We organise walks throughout Wiltshire and
regularly venture into Gloucestershire and Somerset.
Members of the LDWA are welcome to walk with our or any group. We are particularly
pleased to see new members, make every effort to make them feel at home, and hopefully
take an active part in the group.
Throughout the year we walk on the first Sunday of the month, starting at 9am prompt,
and generally cover around 18 to 20 miles. We aim to finish between 4 and 5pm.
From May until September we include a mid-month walk on either a Saturday or
a Sunday that will stretch the boundaries of Wiltshire. We bring packed lunches
although we stop near a pub at lunch time where we are able help the local economy.
Our midweek walks take place on the third Thursday of every month and are between
12 and 16 miles. These walks start at 9.30am and we stop for a pub lunch.
We have mid-morning and mid-afternoon coffee stops on all walks.
We have occasional linear walks with a return journey by train and a
mid-summer walk especially for insomniacs and Druids, to see the sunrise at Avebury.
Weekends away in the Quantocks, Shropshire, Lynton, Snowdonia, the Yorkshire Dales,
and most recently the South Downs have all been enjoyed. Laura Glynne-Jones was
persuaded by the Chairman to write a piece about the South Downs which can be
read in the Away Days section,
along with some photos. Details of our October trip to Hay on Wye are on
the Wilts Waffle page.
The 2009 Pewsey Downsaround Challenge walk in April had distances of 35, 26 and 16 miles
and attracted more than 120 entrants which is many more than ever before. The event will be
on Sunday 11 April in 2010 and we hope to see many familiar and unfamiliar faces.
Results and photos of this year's event are on
the Challenge Walk page.
Details of our week end walks are published in the LDWA's Strider magazine 3 times a year,
and both our week end
and week day walk details
are here on the website. If you would like to join us, or would like any more information about
our group there are details on
the Contact Us page of this site.
The main association web site can be reached via the LDWA Home link in the navigation bar on the left.
We hope you will join us.
