Wilts Waffle
Peak District Weekend
Fri 7th to Sun 9th May, 2010
10/02/10
Just to keep you uptodate with the response so far, we have around a dozen 'definites' (who have already booked their accomodation) and about 6 or 7 'probables'. Some people are finding it difficult to book single rooms in Bakewell itself; if this continues to be the case, they may want to consider widening their search. The villages of Youlegreave, Baslow, Rowsley, and Ashford-in-the-Water are all within 3 miles of Bakewell while the small town of Matlock is 7 miles to the south-east.
On the transport front, Ivor Francis has kindly offered to share his transport arrangements. Any members who would like to take this offer up should contact Ivor directly.
Best wishes

Time marches on - we are already in the second half of January and thoughts are turning to our Spring Weekend away in the Peak District. May will be upon us soon enough so, if you have not already done so, you are advised to reserve the dates and book your B&B for our spring break.
To remind you, the weekend will be based at Bakewell. However, Maytime is very popular in the White Peak area, so you are advised to book early. Single rooms are already scarce. B&B accomodation can be found with this link. Alternatively Google 'Bakewell accomodation' to see what is available. For those of a hardier nature, there is a Youth Hostel three miles away at Youlgreave (Tel: 0845 3719151). If anyone is planning to camp out, the Greenhills Holiday Park (Tel: 01629 813052) is only one mile away. I am planning to have a few days break in Bakewell with Jo in March in order to recce the planned walks and, just as important, to try out the pubs for the evening meals. Since all the walks (and the pubs!) have been given the nod of approval by no less an authority than the Secretary of the LDWA High Peak Group, I am quietly confident that they will pass with flying colours!
The plan for the weekend is basically unchanged from the one given in the last Wilts Wanderer newssheet:
- Friday pm. A 10 mile walk from Bakewell to the grounds of Chatsworth House, then south to Rowsley along the scenic River Derwent. Return to Bakewell through woodland and pastures.
- Saturday. Follow the White Peak Way to Stanton-in-Peak and Birchover via Earl Grey Tower. Pub stop for lunch at Youlgreave before exploring Kirkdale and Ashford-in-the-Water and returning along the Derbyshire Wye valley (total 18-20 miles).
- Check out of our B&B's before driving south to Ilam. Then a 12 mile walk through the stunning scenery of Dovedale, passing Milldale and Alstonefield. The pub lunch stop will be at the Royal Oak at Wetton.
As ever, if anyone cannot make the whole weekend they are welcome to join us for one or two days. Just let me know and we can arrange to meet you. Please let me know as soon as you have made your B&B bookings and I shall be pleased to help with any other queries you may have.
Best wishes
